"It shall be the effort of my life to shed honor on your diploma"thus spoke Elizabeth Blackwell as she accepted her diploma and became the first woman to be granted the degree Doctor of Medicine by a recognized school of medicine.t She had registered as student number 130 in the Medical Department of Geneva University on 30 November, 1847.: Thus, a century has passed during which women have become a familiar sight in medical schools and in all phases of the medical profession. It is felt at this time that a review of the life of this first woman doctor is appropriate. As one reflects on the period of history during which Dr. Blackwell lived, both the social and medical history assume great importance in the background of our present civilization. Of social significance were the suffragette movement, the emancipation of slaves following the war between the states, the great expansion of our country to its most western frontiers, and the industrial revolution brought about by the inventions of the steamboat, the telephone, the electric light bulb, and the automobile. Of medical significance were the discovery of ether anesthesia, smallpox vaccination, the fundamental studies of pathology by Rokitansky and Virchow, Beaumont's classical works in physiology, the writings of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Claude Bernard, Parkinson, Basedow, and Hodgkin, and the work of Louis Pasteur which marks
